Guidelines and Tools for Using AI in CS Ed Research

SIGCSE 2026 Affiliated Event

Overview

As AI tools rapidly become part of the computer science education research landscape, this affiliated half-day event will equip researchers with practical guidance and hands-on strategies for their responsible use. During this event we will share – and invite participants to engage with – a set of AI tools as well as a new set of guidelines for the responsible use of AI tools and systems in computer science education research. This event is directed at anyone who is using or considering using AI tools in their CS education research studies. Participants will learn about the guidelines, which were developed in fall 2025 by those with expertise in STEM education research, including CS education research, and AI systems. We will discuss the application of the guidelines to current and proposed projects and focus on pragmatic implementation of the guidelines in real-world research scenarios using AI tools. Topics will include accuracy and bias, environmental impact, data privacy of participant data, data re-identification, and more. Participants will learn recommended practices for determining whether and how AI tools should be used at each stage of the CS education research process for quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods research studies. This affiliated event will be of interest to anyone using or considering using AI tools in their CS education research workflows. Expertise in AI is not required.
